My understanding of a Western Graphic Novel is a novel which is mainly based around a ‘super hero’ of some kind, these novels story lines can usually be related back to a large American political event. These types of comics are full of colour and expression, bringing a different connotation behind every aspect of detail. Many of the characteristics of the novel have a set theme behind it, a basic structure to make it a ‘super hero’ comic.
This structure includes the main character having super strength/super power, an evil villain, damsel in need of saving and a sidekick. These characters help represent key people in the world, making the audience understand the different between good and evil. The comics help this by giving important clues throughout the storyline to define the different characters types, they do this by using different colours such as red to represent death and yellow to represent hope.
In many of the American novels they also tend to follow a theme of hiding a good moral in the story, this is to help educate the younger fan about the way you should live your life. In the Watchman comic it shows a very strong moral in the story, this is 'it is not Gods fault in the disaster of the world, it is ours'. Showing the audience that they need to be more responsible, we need to respect one another and come together to help the planet by being green.
